It obviously does not work for values of x greater or equal to one. Anything less than that satisfies the equation because $\displaystyle 3^x$ has a maximum value of $\displaystyle 3$ in the interval $\displaystyle (-\infty,1)$. The answer is: $\displaystyle x < 1$.
