    I think atomsa is referring to the quadratic equation

    for ax^2 + bx + c = 0

    the solutions are given by

    \frac {-b\pm\sqrt{b^2-4ac}}{2a}

    in this case a=1,b=3,c=2 so

    \frac {-3\pm\sqrt{3^2-4(1)(2)}}{2(1)}
