Let the mother's age be M

    Then Maria's current age is \frac M9

in three years time, maria will be \frac M9 + 3 years old, and her mother will be M + 3 years old. Since at this time, Maria's age will be one-fifth of her mother's age, we have:

    \frac M9 + 3 = \frac 15 (M + 3)

Now solve for M and you can find their ages
