Maybe this will help: Factor the numerator and denominators, then cancel out any common terms. Your denominator doesn't have a factor of (x-2) in it, though. Are you sure you're reading the problem correctly?

Fair enough. $\displaystyle \frac{x-2}{x^2+6x+8} = \frac{x-2}{(x+4)(x+2)}$. This problem won't reduce, because there are no factors in common.
