    (p + 11q)(p - 11q) = p(p - 11q) + 11q(p - 11q) = p^2 - 11pq + 11pq - 11^2q^2

    = p^2 - 121q^2

    that was step by step. you expand brackets by taking each term in one set of brackets and multiplying everything in the other set. then add up the new terms
