    Reason for FACTORING

Hey im new to these forums and i got a question that needs answering. my college prof has assigned a 2 paragraph essay on the reason why we factor, he does not expect anyone to get it right and the reward is an A for the year and you dont have to return to class,

now im hoping someone can assist me in getting this question right, as my math grade isnt too impressive, so id appriciate any help i can recieve or if anyone can direct me somewhere i can find the answer to this apparently very difficult question.

one reason we factor is to solve for the zeros of some polynomial.

another reason is to simplify things--which has its obvious use

have you tried looking up factoring on google? on wikipedia?

If it sounds too good to be true, then it probably is. I suspect the whole reason for this "assignment" is to get your class to study factoring on their own. I doubt (s)he will give out the reward. (Or else your teacher is exceptionally bad. Though making an offer like this in the first place doesn't lend me much hope for them anyway.)

This sounds like an English class in college. In which a teacher writes asks "why is __ important" on the board and circle the words; then the class raises hands and say completely obvious, trivial, and pathetic things while at the same time the teacher write the responses on the boards
