# Thread: Can you tell me if this question is correct

1. ## Can you tell me if this question is correct

I did a chemistry exam which I found very easy and I thought I would get an easy 90.
However my teacher marked several of my questions which I feel were correct as incorrect.
Since the teacher held onto my test I can only remember one the such questions.
I would appreciate if someone could tell me the correct answer in this case.

1. Convert 105.5 lbs to kg (1kg = 2.2 lbs) two decimal places

I divided 105.5 by 2.2 and got 47.95. The teacher, however, is insistent that the answer is
47.7 even after I put it into the calculator right in front of her.

All together my exam mark dropped about 10 percent because of her and this is not
my first incident with her. I am paying thousands of dollars for school. What should I do?

2. ## Re: Can you tell me if this question is correct

You are correct that 105.5 lbs is closer to 47.95 kg than to 47.7 kg. Is that the entire question? If there was more to the question, then it is possible that there was a mistake that had nothing to do with that specific division. Is this a high school or college class? If it is a high school class, then tell your parents and they can help you figure it out. If it is a college class, then bring the issue to the dean of the department.

It is a college class. The answer is 47.9545 and the 45 is recurring but I rounded it to two decimal places because that is what the question asked. The funny thing is most of the math solutions she was providing for the test were completely incorrect. I had a question where it asked for the weighted average and I calculated it. She put the solution as the average without taking into consideration the weights and marked me incorrect when I am 100% sure that my answer was correct. She is very incompetent and lacks knowledge of basic math. I will try to talk to her again and go to dean if the issue is not resolved. Thank you for your help!

Then talk to the department chair- or dean, if there is no specific department chair. Bring the test, your answers and whatever other solid data you have. Present specific problems and written evidence. Do not just "complain" that the teacher is not doing what you want!

Your answer is correct anawer to the question as asked. The instructor answer you provided, 47.7, is to one decimal place. That's the first error, it is not complete answer to the question. the question is to give the answer in two decimal places.

The question looks flawed. The two given data 105.5 and 2.2 are given with one decimal place, yet the question is to give the answer with two decimal places. No scientist would buy that. The answer to your problem is miningless with more than one decimal place.

Was the test computer based? It could be the instructor was not aware of updates in the software and possibly this is why she sticks to her gun. Apparently she does not have confidence in herself to do the calculations.

Exactly my thoughts. Never in my 15 years of schooling have I seen a teacher so incompetent. I don't want to make someone lose their job, but the things this teacher has done have driven me crazy. She once gave me an assignment with various questions. I received it marked 2 weeks later. All my questions were correct but I received 40 % on it because I didn't include a title page, I didn't type it and several other things when the assignment did not say anywhere that I had to do these things. What's funnier is I spoke with her before I received the marked assignment back and she told me it not to worry about it and that it was her fault for not providing instructions. Yet when I got the assignment I still got 40%.
So instead of having a 95% in this class I now have 84%. The test was not computer based btw. Anyways guys thanks a lot for your help. I have a meeting with the teacher tomorrow. If she refuses to change certain things, I will definitely speak to the dean.
