1. ## Box word problem.

An open-topped box is made from a rectangular piece of cardboard, with dimensions 24 cm by 30 cm, by cutting congruent squares from each corner and folding up the sides. Determine the dimensions of the squares to be cut to create a box with volume of 1040cm^3
Okay, this question is giving me trouble.I do not under stand it... the derived equation from the question is x(24-2x)(30-2x) = 1040.

-First of all i do not under stand the (24-2x) or the (30-2x) because how do they represent the length and width of the square? Imagine i have a rectangle and I shade out two square corners, I would be left with just the inside which is not the dimension of the small square? (hope that made sense >.<).

-Where on earth does the x before (24-2x) come from? Is it there to compensate that we are dealing with volume (degree 3)?
