The best advice I can offer is to look online for sites that offer problem solving strategies. Here are the first couple I found with a quick Google search:

Are you having trouble reading these problems?

The first says "If the two salespeople sold a total of 101 stereos, find the number sold." At first I thought that must be a typo and the problem really asked for "the number each sold", but then the second says "One hundred eighty-five people work in building the ships ... find the number working in building the ship."
