# Thread: Should I learn polynomial long division?

1. ## Should I learn polynomial long division?

My girlfriend is taking a math class and I am teaching her. In one chapter they are learning polynomial long division. It seems extremely pointless and I've never seen it used anywhere...Is there any reason to learn it? Are there alternative ways to divide polynomials? This "long division" is something you learn in grade school (where I slept).

Hey Paze.

i would recommend you know how to learn it if you have to do things like solve certain classes of DE's (using operator method), factor polynomials or to simplify ratios of polynomials.

It is not always used but if you do end up in the above situations, its very useful.

Okay, looking into it. Thanks!

I don't recall ever using it in physics or anywhere else outside of "math" classes, but it will emerge again in other topics like calculus and diff eq, which will be a pain in the neck if you left it behind. One example I recall from calc was with curve sketching and slant asymptotes.
