Total fabric is 3+ 1/2 = 7/2 yds Erica uses 2/3 of the fabric. 2/3 of fabric = 7/2 * 2/3 = 7/3 yds Fabric left = 7/2 - 7/3 = 7/6 I think that should help
Equivalently, if Erica used 2/3 of the fabric, 1- 2/3= 1/3 of the fabric was left. 3+ 1/2= 6/2+ 1/2= 7/2 as idbutt said and (1/3)(7/2)= 7/6= 1 and 1/6 yards left.
Why did we need to multiply the total fabric 7/2 with the fabric used 2/3??
Simple because Erica used only 2/3 of the cloth, that is why we multiply 7/2 with 2/3.
