Thread: Formula involving a score for questions answered within a set time

1. Formula involving a score for questions answered within a set time

Hi All, I hope I am posting in the correct thread? I am using Microsoft Excel to construct a formula so it is possible to use "IF" statements but I need a little help on the Maths side.

The student has to answer 25 questions while being timed.
The goal is to answer the questions within 25 seconds.
If he answers all questions correctly then this will earn him a rating of 3000 (the maximum rating)
If he answers all questions correctly but takes 50 seconds then his rating would be 1500
If he answers all questions correctly but takes only 15 seconds then his rating would still be 3000.

Can any one help with the Maths relating to this?
Many thanks

Hey tlawson.

Are you familiar with the Heaviside function? You can convert IF statements into mathematical functions with this function.

Hi Chiro

Sorry but I think my post may be a bit misleading.
What I need is some formulas or the method to work out the test results Rating. I was unsure if this could be done using 1 formula so just happened to mention that I was using Excel to solve it. Maybe I should have left that bit out.
I think the problem should be easy to solve but in this case I am being let down by my maths knowledge or lack of.
