# Math Help - Help with this arithmetic question

1. ## Help with this arithmetic question

Matt’s motorbike can do 200 km on 13 litres of fuel. Matt’s car does550 km on 47 litres of petrol.

(a) How many ‘litres per hundred kilometres’ does each vehicle achieve?

(b) How far does each vehicle get on just one litre of petrol?

(c) Which vehicle is more fuel efficient?

2. ## Re: Help with this arithmetic question

Is that question a joke or something...

a) MB = 200/13 = ... * 100km =
Car = 550/47 = ... *100km =

b) Set up a proportion. For the motorbike:
$\frac{\text{distance}}{\text{amount of fuel}} = \frac{200~km}{13~L}$

Can you finish this? (The answers to b) give you the answers to c) ).

4. ## Re: Help with this arithmetic question

Just find how many km does it cover in 1 litre of petrol Motorbike 200/13 km in 1 litre and Car 550/47 km . The one that covers more distance in 1 litre is more fuel efficient.

5. ## Re: Help with this arithmetic question

hi guys thanks for the help:

so to sum up is this correct:

A:
motorbike = 13/200 * 100 = 6.5 litres per hundred kilometres
car = 47/550 * 100 = 8.55 litres per hundred kilometres

B:
motorbike = 550/47 = 11.70/1
car = 220/13 = 15.39/1

C:
Which makes the bike more fuel efficient because you can get 11.70 KM per 1 litre of fuel, as opposed to 15.39 KM per 1 litre for the car?

Why do you consider it is the motorbike as more efficient?

can you explain?

7. ## Re: Help with this arithmetic question

woops read that around the wrong way-
so the car is more efficient because it can do 15.39 KM on 1 litre of petrol rather the bike can only do 11.70KM per 1 litre of petrol?

correct?

MathKid182 (if that even is your real name) I hope your learnt something from the nice friendly people of the internet, however, I could have come and asked for help understanding this material from me (your course coordinator) or from the other staff. I find it annoying that you didn't change the numbers so that you could have learnt the techniques and then been confident enough to do your own assignment yourself. I hope your truly have learnt this material and the other questions I have seen asked on this and other forums because you will need it.
