IF looking at any graph, say for instance $\displaystyle x^2$, how does one estimate slopes? I don't understand it.

I know a flat line is 0.

Going up seems to be positive. Going down seems to be negative.

yes, if the graph is going from bottom left to top right, the slope is positive. if going from top left to bottom right, the slope is negative. estimating with greater accuracy depends on the graph you are using. if the graph has a grid, then it's a lot easier. you can actually use the grid to find the slope pretty accurately...provided the graph lines up with the grid nicely
