Need Help With A Word Problem...

A truck enters a highway driving 60 mph. A car enters the highway at the same place 8 minutes later and drives 75 mph in the same direction. From the time the car enters the highway, how long will it take the car to pass the truck (in minutes)?

60(t+8/60) = 75(t/60)

If the equation is correct, I still can't solve it because I am unsure of how to do the fractions... Please help!

Re: Need Help With A Word Problem...

Let the car meet the truck after x minutes.

Speed of car 75 mph = 75/60 miles per minutes. Thus distance traveled by car = 75/60 x minutes

Similarly distance travelled by the truck = 60/60 ( x + 8 ) minutes

But both have traveled the same distance.

Thus 75/60 x=60/(60 )(x+8 )

75x=60x + 8x60

15x = 8 x 60 OR x = 32

Thus the car will overtake the truck after 32 minutes
