1. ## Maths Scholarship help

Hello i am studying for a scholarship which I am due to take in 1 week. I am doing a few practice papers and I was wondering if anyone could work out the answer to this question

The Best Bakery sells triangular cakes at 39p and square buns 23p each. For her party, Helen
buys a total of 40 of these cakes and buns and spends £13.52.
How many of each did she buy?

Hello, gazing600000!

$\displaystyle \text{The Best Bakery sells triangular cakes at }39\cent\text{ and square buns at }23\cent\text{ each.}$
$\displaystyle \text{For her party, Helen buys a total of 40 of these cakes and buns and spends \$13.52.}\displaystyle \text{How many of each did she buy?}$Let$\displaystyle C$= number of cakes. . . At$\displaystyle 39\cent$each, they cost$\displaystyle 39C$cents. Let$\displaystyle B$= number of buns. . . At$\displaystyle 23\cent$each, they cost$\displaystyle 23B$cents. The total cost is$\displaystyle \$13.52 \,=\,1352\cent.$
. . $\displaystyle 39C + 23B \:=\:1352$

The total number bought is 40:
. . $\displaystyle C + B \:=\:40$

Solve the system of equations: .$\displaystyle \begin{Bmatrix}39C + 23B &=& 1352 \\ C + B &=& 40 \end{Bmatrix}$
