A fractions question i need solved.
Hi, I am 49 and trying to learn fractions. I have tought myself long devision in a couple of weeks. I already know multiplication and subtraction as I want to get on the railway as conductor in the UK, and their is a basic maths test. I can't do fractions I'm useless at fractions. I'm trying to teach myself. I understand this fraction untill it gets to the final answer. I'll write it out the way I understand it.

6/7+6/8 =. 6X8+7X6/7X8 =. 48+42/56 =. 90/56 = 45X2/28X2 =. 45/2

I understand what I have put, but how do they come
up with the answer = 1 17/28 which is mixed numbers.
Can anyone please expain it and how to do it. Can you show it written down like I've done on the above sum.

Thanks. Andy.

Your post is hard to read. Since the forum does not preserve alignment, write $a / b$ instead of $\frac{a}{b}$. Make sure to use parentheses where necessary.

$\frac{45}{28} = \frac{28+17}{28} = \frac{28}{28} + \frac{17}{28} = 1 + \frac{17}{28}$

Is it possible to leave the answer as 17/28 in a test or would I have to go further with it.

You cannot go further with it since 17 is a prime number and cannot be divided.
