Thread: Quick Math problem

Hello, my name is Andrew, I just joined the forum and have a quick math problem.

6/2(2+1)=x

PEMDAS multiply or division whichever comes first.. Same with addition and subtraction.
the answer I'm getting is x=9
but I'm getting conflicting answers, some people are telling me x=1.
just need to confirm the answer is 9. Thanks.

Your expression is ambiguous.

Do you intend it to mean (6/2)*(2+1) in which case the result is 9, or, 6/{2(2+1)} in which case the result is 1.

A rule that is often adopted is 'work from left to right' in which case the result would be the first of these. However, best is to put in some extra brackets to remove the ambiguity.

6/2*(2+1) = 6/2*3 = 9

This is a known internet meme from 2011.
It seems to me that starting a discussion on this is a bit outdated.
