# Math Help - how to expand these brackets please?

1. ## how to expand these brackets please?

x = (1/2 (y+1))^2

so: (1/2 (y+1)) ( 1/2 (y+1))

The answer supposed to be: 1/4 y^2 + y + 3/4

But cant work it out with the FOIL method.

Thank you

Why not?
$\left ( \frac{1}{2} (y+1) \right )\left ( \frac{1}{2} (y+1) \right )$

$= \frac{1}{2} \cdot \frac{1}{2} (y + 1)(y + 1)$

Can you do it now?

Could it be that the reason you thought you could not work it out by FOIL was because the answer is not as you posted?

[(1/2)(y+1)]^2
= (1/4)(y^2 +2y +1)
= (1/4)y^2 +(1/2)y +1/4
