x = (1/2 (y+1))^2 so: (1/2 (y+1)) ( 1/2 (y+1)) The answer supposed to be: 1/4 y^2 + y + 3/4 But cant work it out with the FOIL method. Thank you

Thank you Why not? $\displaystyle \left ( \frac{1}{2} (y+1) \right )\left ( \frac{1}{2} (y+1) \right )$ $\displaystyle = \frac{1}{2} \cdot \frac{1}{2} (y + 1)(y + 1)$ Can you do it now? -Dan

Thank you Could it be that the reason you thought you could not work it out by FOIL was because the answer is not as you posted? [(1/2)(y+1)]^2 = (1/4)(y^2 +2y +1) = (1/4)y^2 +(1/2)y +1/4
