    Polynomial Equation???

A 10m by 20m pool is surrounded by a deck of uniform width. The area of the deck is 216 meters squared. How wide is the deck?

Anyone get this? Please be as detailed as possible....

I'd appreciate if you could help at all?

Let x be the width of the deck.

the outer dimensions of the pool and the deck will be (10 + 2x) by (20 + 2x)

now, the area of the deck is the area of the outer figure minus the area of the pool (draw a diagram!), and we know that is equal to 216, thus the equation we need to solve is:

    (10 + 2x)(20 + 2x) - 10(20) = 216

i trust you can take it from here

i believe that's wrong. and if you cannot factor, use the quadratic formula

    Hi,

there is a typo in your equation. I should read:

    x^2+15x-54 = 0

    which easily can be factored.
