I need help with word problems that require MAAD Table
Suppose that one slice of Grandma's mincemeat pie has as many calories as six ounces of turkey and a candied yam. Suppose that a candied yam has six calories more than four ounces of turkey. Suppose that a slice of mincemeat pie and nine ounces of turkey has 994 calories. How many calories would then be in one candied yam?

I know that we are looking for how many calories are in one yam, X = calories in one yam

__x___|_____|_____
______|_____|____
994 | |

Hello, jaguirre1!

Quote:

Suppose that a candied yam has six calories more than four ounces of turkey.
Suppose that a slice of mincemeat pie and nine ounces of turkey has 994 calories.
How many calories would then be in one candied yam?

Let: .$\displaystyle \begin{Bmatrix}P &=& \text{calories in a slice of pie} \\ T &=& \text{calories in an oz. of turkey}\\ Y &=& \text{calories in a candied yam} \end{Bmatrix}$

We are told: .$\displaystyle \begin{Bmatrix}P \:=\:6T + Y \\ Y \:=\:4T + 6 \\ P+9T \:=\:994 \end{Bmatrix}$

We have this system of equations: .$\displaystyle \begin{Bmatrix}P - 6T - Y &=& 0 \\ \quad -4T + Y &=& 6 \\ P+9T \qquad&=& 994 \end{Bmatrix}$
Solve the system.

$\displaystyle \text{[You should get: }\,P = 526,\;T = 52,\;Y = 214]$

How did you do this without the table...

I understand everything up to when you get to the system of equations..
