Thread: Expression for surface area

Please don't just given the answer. I need to know how to do it. Thank you.

Start by drawing a net of this shape. Then evaluate the area of this net by summing the areas of all the pieces.

four squares, all x by x

two rectangles, all x by 5x/8

two triangles (each 1/2 base times height) ... sketch an altitude perpendicular to the ground, the use Pythagoras to find the height.
