Start by subtracting 1/2 from both sides. Then note that multiplying by 1/3 is the same as dividing by 3. How would you undo dividing by 3?

Alternatively, multiply both side by 6, the common denominator. Voi la! No fractions!

The thing is, is he wanted the standard procedure with steps. Even I at calculus level in college, go through the steps to make sure that I don't make a stupid mistake.
