I'm struggling to understand how to work this equation out:

2 4

Please can somebody explain the solution to me?

I assume that you mean:

$\frac g2 - 1 = \frac g4 + 1~\implies~\frac g2 - \frac g4 = 1+1~\implies~\frac g4 =2$
