# Math Help - tricky ratio problem

1. ## tricky ratio problem

the ratio of the two numbers is 7:8. If their sum is 135, what is the bigger number?

2. ## Re: tricky ratio problem

Aren't you studying calculus? Because you've been posting calculus questions previously and now you're posting a really simple algebra question.

3. ## Re: tricky ratio problem

$\frac{x}{y} = \frac{7}{8}$

$x+y = 135$

same idea as your other post ... solve the system for x and y

Yeah, you should probably review algebra before continuing on to calculus. It is almost impossible to pass a calculus class without a firm understanding of algebra.
