    exponential functions

    The equation y=b^x is an exponential function. If the graph of the function is a smooth curve, why cant the value of b be negative?

    Just as \sqrt{b} is not defined if b<0 then b^x is not defined if b<0~\&~x=\tfrac{1}{2}.
