    Binomial Radical Expressions

    A hiker drops a rock from the rim of the Grand Canyon. The distance it falls d in feet after t seconds is given by the function d=16t^2. How far has the rock fallen after (3 + sq rt(2) )seconds? Please show steps!

    squaring a binomial involves the following pattern ...

    (a+b)^2 = a^2 + 2ab + b^2

    so let a = 3 and b = \sqrt{2}
