The part that I'm struggling with is:

log (lambda_3i)

If (lambda_3i) is the base, then what and where is 'a' ?

It seems unlikely that $\lambda_{3i}$ is the base.

When a log is written just as log it will be intended to be either base 10 or base e.

If it's \displaystyle \begin{align*} \log_{10} \end{align*} then you should be making 10 the base of the exponential.

If it's \displaystyle \begin{align*} \log_e \end{align*} then you should be making e the base of the exponential.
