    Slightly difficult word problem

    Here's one more question that gave me trouble from a GMAT reviewer.

    let C = number of chickens, let F = number of days his feed will last C chickens

    then we have (C-15)/(F+4) and (C+20)/(F-3)

    but I'm not sure how to relate these two to give us the answer we want.

    Re: Slightly difficult word problem

    let c=number of chickens
    f = stock of feed
    p = days that the feed is planned to last

    you are told that
    (c-15)/f=p+4
    (c+20)/f = p-3
    c/f = p

    thats 3 equations in 3 unknowns, solve simultaneously.

    edit alarmingly, the equations i wrote have no solutions according to wolfram alpha, so i must have made a mistake

    Re: Slightly difficult word problem

    Try inverting each of the left hand sides.

    The stock feed is the number of daily chicken portions available.
    Divide by the number of chickens to get the number of days.
