Math Help - simplifying algebraic fraction

1. simplifying algebraic fraction

Hello, I cannot understand how this fraction is simplified.
Can someone please explain this process.

((-2x^2) - 2x) / (x^4)
= ((-2x) - 2) / x^3

Thanks kindly for any help.

2. Re: simplifying algebraic fraction

Take $\frac{-2x^2 - 2x}{x^4}$ by the distributive law we have: $\frac{x(-2x - 2)}{x^4}$ then we realize that $\frac{1}{x} \cdot x = 1$ so it simplifies to $\frac{-2x - 2}{x^3}$
