((-2x^2) - 2x) / (x^4)

= ((-2x) - 2) / x^3

Take $\displaystyle \frac{-2x^2 - 2x}{x^4}$ by the distributive law we have: $\displaystyle \frac{x(-2x - 2)}{x^4}$ then we realize that $\displaystyle \frac{1}{x} \cdot x = 1$ so it simplifies to $\displaystyle \frac{-2x - 2}{x^3}$
