I'm not quite sure how to answer this question could somebody help me please.

Q1 Write a formula for
a) the perimeter
b) the area.

part 2. If the area is 40cm (squared), show that 15x-45=0

(sigh) You should've just posted this back in your original thread, but since the diagram is here I'll do it here.

The perimeter is the distance around the rectangle. So
$\displaystyle P = 2l + 2w$
where $\displaystyle l = 3x - 1$ and $\displaystyle w = 5$.
So what is the perimeter?

The area of a rectangle is $\displaystyle A = lw$, and you know this is 40. So:
$\displaystyle (3x - 1) \cdot 5 = 40$

$\displaystyle 15x - 5 = 40$

Thus
$\displaystyle 15x - 45 = 0$
