    vertex form for a quadratic ...

    y = a(x - h)^2 + k , where (h,k) are the vertex coordinates.

    y = -\frac{1}{2}(x - 0)^2 + 0

    moving the vertex of the parabola from (0,0) to (2,-4) ...

    y = -\frac{1}{2}(x-2)^2 - 4
