    40+40*0+1 = ?

    Hi All,

I'm currently having a 'discussion' with the majority of my friends regarding the outcome of the following equation.

    40+40*0+1

Now, using the Order or Operations I get the answer as 41 by the following steps

    40+40*0+1 becomes
    40+0+1 this results in
    41.

The rest of my friends that I am discussing this with think the answer is 1 as in

    40+40*0+1 becomes
    80*0+1 becomes
    0*1 results in
    1

I'm certain that I am correct as multiplication has to be done first but as I'm the only one saying this way is correct, I'm now starting to doubt myself. If I am wrong, can you explain why?

    Kind Regards

    Ben

You are absolutely 100% correct. Multiplications are done before additions/subtractions, always, everywhere in the world.

The order of operations that your friends are talking about occurs when you enter this equation into a cheap pocket calculator. However that's because those low-tech calculators can only process a single operation at a time, so they get the order 'wrong'.

Thanks Corsica, really appreciate that. Not wanting to offend you as I appreciate your quick reply, but I would also like a couple of other to confirm this as well, not that I don't believe you, but just one reply doesnít add much weight to me convincing them they are wrong, itís currently me against 4 with one of them describing the Order of Operations as 'rubbish'.

    : )) Cute.

The answer is 41. Uhm, you know you could use a math manual or something of that sort to prove them you're right, don't you?

You should see the number of web pages I've linked for them and they still don't believe me. I sure if I brought a math text book out that at somepoint during reading it someone would shout 'Blasphemy!' Haha
