# Math Help - Reciprocal of a Linear Function

1. ## Reciprocal of a Linear Function

Determine the equation in the form f(x)=1/(kx-c) for the function with a vertical asymptote at x=-1 and a y-intercept at -0.25.

I don't get how you get k or c.

2. ## Re: Reciprocal of a Linear Function

The y intercept is where $x=0$.

The asymptote is a point the graph will tend towards but never reach. When will a value for $f(x)$ not exist for $x=-1$? Hint: Consider the denominator.

3. ## Re: Reciprocal of a Linear Function

I got c=4 and k=-4, but so is the answer 1/(-4x-4)?

Looks good! You can always plot the function here to check.

5. ## Re: Reciprocal of a Linear Function

Okay, thank you!
