Really struggling with algebra in my computer networking degree

Hello all, I feel like im going to fail my maths module so hard. I went for my first lecture today and the lecturer put an example of a "basic" algebra question on the board which was

y = mx + c

which I later remembered was something to do with the gradiant graph thing. Almost everyone got the answer and I didnt even know where to begin. My brain finds it impossible to think of letters as numbers and this is just the first day!

I got as far as y - c = mx but thats it. Going for my second lecture now on maths where we are going to learn about logic algebra, I havent even heard of it before but oh well lets go and see :(

*y = mx+c* is the equation of a line. m is the gradient and c the y-intercept

What was the question?

A good place to post questions about logic later is the Discrete Mathematics, Set Theory and Logic section of this forum.

It seems like you'll have a lot of catching up to do. Do your best during two or three weeks, asking a lot of questions in class (be bold about it), doing all home assignments and going to office hours. Get old textbooks, ask the instructor for the titles if necessary. Then see how it's going. You may very well catch up.

A solid understanding of algebra will be vital if you're going to be doing any computer programming. I recommend buying a decent Maths book that will teach you enough for entry level university stuff, like this one.

Thanks guys, I went for my second lecture today and im learning something called proposition logic but its ok because nobody has ever learnt it before so we are all in the same boat. Hopefully there wont be too much algebra but ill revise some more I guess
