# Math Help - Word problems

1. ## Word problems

Hi,

1. A rectangular prism is made up of 4 layers of blocks. Each layer has 8 blocks and each block has a volume of $1 \text{cm}^3$. What is the volume of the prism?

$4 \times 8 \times 1 = 32 \rm{cm}^3$

=> length x width x height

2. Three and a half cakes were shared equally among 7 students. What portion of a cake did each student receive?

$3 \frac12 \div 7$

$= \frac12$

3. A truck can hold $\frac12$ kg of sand. How many similar trucks will together hold 5 kg of sand?

$5 \div \frac12$

$= 10$

Good work!
I might change the first method...

Yes, Volume is L x W x H, but they don't give you ANY of those (at least not with the same/convertible unit throughout).

You have (4 layers) x (8 blocks/layer) x (1cm^3/block), which is indeed 32 cm^3
