Which steps to use and when to use them ? ?

Alright, so.. I'm currently confused when it comes to solving simple eqautions like

11n = 10n + 21

or

17z = 16z + 8

or even

-36 = y + 12

I dont need to know how to do those problems, but I need to know when to do what.

Like in the first equation, Do I use division? subtraction ? addition ? What type of equations do I use what kind of operators.

If you have the equation:

$\displaystyle 11n=10n+21$

We want the variable $\displaystyle n$ in one side and the constants in the other side.

First (and only) step: subtract 10n of every side:

$\displaystyle 11n-10n=10n+21-10n$

$\displaystyle \Leftrightarrow n=21$
