    when adding or subtracting fractions, we need the lowest common denominator

    $\displaystyle
    \frac{1+x}{3} + \frac{x-5}{6}
    $

    $\displaystyle
    \frac{2 + 2x + x - 5}{6}
    $

    $\displaystyle
    \frac{3x - 3}{6}
    $

    $\displaystyle
    \frac{x -1}{2}
    $

    Please use brackets so that we know what you mean.

    Is a supposed to be:

    $\displaystyle 1+\frac{x}{3} + x-\frac{5}{6}$

    or:

    $\displaystyle \frac{(1+x)}{3} + \frac{(x-5)}{6}$?
