    SAT question

    a certain fraction is equivalent to 2/3. if 3 is added to numerator and 1 is added to denominator, fraction is equivalent to 3/4. what's the numerator of original fraction?

    \dfrac{2x+3}{3x+1} = \dfrac{3}{4}

    Solve for 2x, not x (so discard 17 and 27 immediately)
