# Math Help - Need help with explaining a fraction to decimal and vice versa

1. ## Need help with explaining a fraction to decimal and vice versa

We are learning how to convert fractions into decimals and then into percents. Ok well our teacher had us draw out a line and make 25,50,75,100% on this line and then had us underneath it say what the fraction of it would be. Ok so here is where i am stuck (so to speak)

he said to get half of 25% we would need to divide 25 by 2 to get 12.5 and he said to make into a fraction which I got 1/8. This all makes sense to me.. now i know 1/16 is half of one eight and i got the decimal which is 6.25 but how does 6.25 go into a 1/16 fraction?

I divided 1/16 which got me 0.0625 which is my decimal and i know to move it over two places to the right to get my percent but i dont know how to make it into a fraction of 1/16? Maybe my brain is fried right now

someone help

2. ## Re: Need help with explaining a fraction to decimal and vice versa

$\frac{1}{16} = 0.0625 =$6.25%

Going the other way 6.25% = $0.0625$ this much should be clear.

Which can be written as $0.0625 = \frac{0.0625}{1}$ as a fraction.

Now times both the top and bottom by 1000 to remove the decimal point $\frac{0.0625}{1} =\frac{625}{10000}$

Then simplify and you will get $\frac{1}{16}$

Thank you so very much!! I was confused about the 0.0625 numerator. So if I do run into a problem like that again like say 0.0045 i just would times it by its placement value right? Which i dont think i will until i get into more complicated math.

Thank you again so very much..i love your icon as well

Just multiply by the power of 10 which will make your decimal a whole number, do the same multiplication to the denominator.
