I know I'm going to kick myself for this, but can someone remind me how to isolate and solve for y in this type of problem: $\displaystyle y^2 + y = x^2 - 4$

Have you considered the Quadratic Formula or Completing the Square?
Ah, yes I was right about kicking myself. Aside from being very rusty, I got confused because it looks like there are two seperate equations - one for each variable. Thank you for that. I shall now beat myself soundly.
