Thread: Worded problem - get equation and solve.

I have another problem now. Here it is:
One quarter of a number is for 3 bigger than a sixth of the same number. Who is that number?
The thing that confuses me the most in this one are the fractions. How am I supposed to set it up and how do I get rid of the fractions?

x/4=x/6 + 3
x/4 - x/6 = 3
lowest common denominator = 12
so multiply the first term by 3 and the second by 2 to get 12
(3x - 2x)/12 = 3
3x-2x = 36
x = 36
