What you have typed most closly corresponds to:

    $\displaystyle 3-\left(-\frac{1}{18}\right)=3+\frac{1}{18}\approx 3.05556$

but I suspect that is not what you mean.

    May be you mean

    $\displaystyle x=3^{-\frac{1}{18}}=1/3^{\frac{1}{18}}$ ?

which should be evaluatable on your calculator

    or:

    $\displaystyle x=e^{-\frac{1}{18}\ln(3)$
