    Scale, ratio and proportion

The scale in a map is 1:22,000.000. Two cities are distant from New York 4 and 6cm, respectively. If a road was built connecting the three cities, what would the minimum extention of this road?

In my opinion, the minimun extension would be 6cm x 22million, which out result in 132,000.000 centimeters or 1320 kilometers. But the book says the correct answer would be 220km. Could anyone explain to me what did I do wrong? Cheers

You write the scale as "1:22,000.000" with a comma and a period. Do you mean "1:22,000,000" or "1:22,000"?

You seem to be right in saying that the shortest possible road to build between the cities, going from the information provided, is 1320 kilometres. I assume you're thinking along these lines:

The book authors seem to think that this is the shortest road to build, given the information:

If you haven't omitted any crucial information regarding the problem, I can only say that you're right and that the authors of the book are totally wrong. They have simply forgotten that city A can lie inbetween New York and city B. Also they seem to have problems converting between centimetres and kilometres.
