    Can someone show me how to simplify step by step?
    4x^2/36x

    I think you mean "rational" expression ...

    \displaystyle \frac{4x^2}{36x} = \frac{4x \cdot x}{9 \cdot 4x} = \frac{x}{9} , x \ne 0
