Math Help - simplification question

    simplification question

    Hello, this example is under the heading of "simplify the following, giving your answer with positive indices".
    However as a newbie I dont understand what is going on. Can you someone please tell the terminology for this type of operation so I can google it and work out how to do it.

    the fourth root of 16 ... \sqrt[4]{16} = 16^{\frac{1}{4}} = (2^4)^{\frac{1}{4}} = 2
