Thread: time word problem

Hi all;
I'm trying to solve the following problem I know the answer is 5hours I just need to know if I'm solving right.

Wilbur left the hardware store and traveled
toward the recycling plant at an average
speed of 33 km/h. Mary left two hours later
and traveled in the same direction but with
an average speed of 55 km/h. How long did

Wilbur travel before Mary caught up?

I've got (3)33 + 33(x) = 55 + 55(x) resulting x=2 which does result in 5hours is this right?

t = time in hours wilbur travels

t - 2 = time in hours mary travels

wilbur's distance traveled = mary's distance traveled

33t = 55(t-2)

solve for t
