Thread: Average

1. Average

"Fred, Norman, and Dave own a total of 128 comic books. If Dave owns 44 of them, what is the average (arithmetic mean) number of comic books owned by Fred and Norman?"

Now i Know the average is adding numbers together then dividing by the number of added numbers. But... how can I figure out the above problem if I don't know how many Fred and Norman have? Any help would be highly appreciated.

you don't need to know how many they have separately ... you need to know how many they have together ... 128 - 44

3. awesome thanks for the reply.. ok so if 128-44 is 84 then do i just divide by 2 to get 42? So the answer would be 42?
