gains and profits are considered by most folks to be positive values.

losses and costs are considered to be negative values.

the opposite of a positive value is negative and the opposite of a negative value is positive.

correct ... so for the first one, what number represents a gain of 5 yards?

what is the opposite of that number?

You need to determine the numbers to place in the blanks based upon the information I provided.

That would be +5 and opposite is -5? but there is another blank spot to put something for the Number:__ :S

6. "+5" and "-5" are the numbers! The "opposite" of "a gain of 5 yards" is "a loss of 5 yards". And the numbers are +5 and -5 respectively.
